To familiarize with technical methods and procedures in Germany a hospitation programme for to Indonesian foresters was designed and implemented from August 19th to September 3rd 2019. During this time 2 representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s Directorate of Forest Resources Inventory and Monitoring (IPSDH) and Center for Environment and Forestry Education and Training (PUSDIKLAT) visited the state forest enterprise of the German federal state of Hessen (HessenForst) participating in activities in the company’s central planning unit as well as within the Forest Management Units (FMU) Michelstadt and Gross Gerau. Besides that opportunities were given to visit the faculty of forestry at University of Goettingen and the regional council including superior forest authority in Kassel. Since the hospitation programme was developed and prepared within the framework of the Forest Expert Programme, implemented by German Forest Society (Deutscher Forstverein, also based in Goettingen), the guests were introduced to this association, too.

The visitors from Indonesia were familiarized with the structures of the HessenForst state forest enterprise. Subsequently, insights were provided into several methods for the inventory of forest stands (complete and sample survey) and the investigation of site conditions, in particular soil quality. This was followed by the presentation of the procedures for data evaluation and consolidation and their pictorial presentation, among other using a company-specific Geographic Information System (GIS). Beyond office discussions the practical data collection in the field, which causes a lot of efforts, as well as the relevance of these data for daily work of Forest Management Units was part of the programme. When visiting a FMU information on set-up, tasks and every-day-procedures of German forestry offices could be gathered.

Last not least a couple of cultural side events were also arranged during the stay in order to bring the German culture a little closer to the participants of the hospitation. Thus some attractions in the forest like nature parks and wildlife reserves but also sights in and around the cities of Goettingen and Kassel as well as the Odenwald landscape could be viewed.

From August 20h to 29th GIZ FORCLIME once again conducted a study tour to Germany featuring the participative management of large protected areas. As before the opportunity was given to a group of Indonesian forestry professionals to get German structures and processes be explained and to discuss technical issues with numerous German experts.

This time, the Indonesian delegation consisted of participants from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Jakarta, the Centre for Forestry Education and Training in Bogor and the Provincial Forestry Service of West Kalimantan. The group was accompanied by FORCLIME staff as usual.

According to the theme of this year's expert exchange, several protected areas were visited, including UNESCO biosphere reserves, nature parks and a national park in the German federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. The programme was completed by interesting presentations and talks in the responsible Ministry of the Federal State of Mecklenburg and several professional associations.

Of course, the visit to a forestry management unit was not lacking either, to learn about set-up and objectives of public forest services in Germany. At the same time it should be clarified which are tasks of forest management with regards to environmental protection and education and how cooperation among forestry units and institutions of nature conservation is arranged.

As a result it should be noted that many technical questions were addressed and the solutions of both countries were compared. In addition, questions of management, environmental awareness of the general public and above all forms of collaboration were discussed. This included the important issue of participation, i.e. the involvement of all regional bodies and individual stakeholders who may be affected by conservation measures.

With the intention of increasing the capacity of forest farmer groups in agroforestry practices in Kampung Batu Rajang, Berau, East Kalimantan, FORCLIME conducted a training on August 22-23, 2019. During the two-day training, participants gained more knowledge about farming applying environmentally friendly management without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Training practices are carried out in farmers' fields, including practices on how to maintain and manage pepper, cocoa and rubber plants.

After this training, there will be training related to the organization of farmer groups, such as the preparation of the statutes and by-laws and administrative management.
