The Government of Kapuas Hulu District supported by FORCLIME conducted a workshop on Biosphere Reserve Management for Sustainable Development on 20-22 August 2019 in Bogor. The workshop was attended by 70 participants from Kapuas Hulu District Government, LIPI, Civil Societies, farmer groups from Kapuas Hulu, private sector, Ministry of Environment and Forestry including the national parks Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum and Gede Pangrango, as well as Bappenas.

The workshop aimed at learning best practices from the management of an established biosphere reserve in Indonesia and at global level. Following a two-day discussion, the parties participating in the workshop agreed to implement natural resource management in the Biosphere Reserve to achieve sustainable development in the Kapuas Hulu Regency. The implementation must be in a sustainable way, based on science and by upholding local wisdom and the sustainability of the landscape.

The parties are committed to take action, including: Building a multi-stakeholder platform; collaborating with broader stakeholders in order to develop a road map; to work with communities, institutions and government, both at the central and regional levels; to ensure the products and environmental services from the Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum Kapuas Hulu (BKDSKH) Biosphere Reserve can be traced back to their source and to ensure that the products are deforestation-free. Additionally the event focused on the sustainability of natural forests, conserving high carbon stocks and respecting conservation values as well as community rights and livelihoods, whileworking with governments, donors, markets, financial institutions and NGOs, next to creating appropriate funding mechanisms.

The workshop was finalized by visiting Kampung Sarongge, Cianjur district, West Java, which is the buffer zone of the Cibodas Biosphere Reserve. Some social economic activities supervised by the Gede Pangrango National Park were demonstrated.
