The Government of Kapuas Hulu District supported by FORCLIME conducted a workshop on Biosphere Reserve Management for Sustainable Development on 20-22 August 2019 in Bogor. The workshop was attended by 70 participants from Kapuas Hulu District Government, LIPI, Civil Societies, farmer groups from Kapuas Hulu, private sector, Ministry of Environment and Forestry including the national parks Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum and Gede Pangrango, as well as Bappenas.

The workshop aimed at learning best practices from the management of an established biosphere reserve in Indonesia and at global level. Following a two-day discussion, the parties participating in the workshop agreed to implement natural resource management in the Biosphere Reserve to achieve sustainable development in the Kapuas Hulu Regency. The implementation must be in a sustainable way, based on science and by upholding local wisdom and the sustainability of the landscape.

The parties are committed to take action, including: Building a multi-stakeholder platform; collaborating with broader stakeholders in order to develop a road map; to work with communities, institutions and government, both at the central and regional levels; to ensure the products and environmental services from the Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum Kapuas Hulu (BKDSKH) Biosphere Reserve can be traced back to their source and to ensure that the products are deforestation-free. Additionally the event focused on the sustainability of natural forests, conserving high carbon stocks and respecting conservation values as well as community rights and livelihoods, whileworking with governments, donors, markets, financial institutions and NGOs, next to creating appropriate funding mechanisms.

The workshop was finalized by visiting Kampung Sarongge, Cianjur district, West Java, which is the buffer zone of the Cibodas Biosphere Reserve. Some social economic activities supervised by the Gede Pangrango National Park were demonstrated.

The Berau Barat Forest Management Unit (KPH Berau Barat) conducted a meeting to socialize the Tembalang waterfall forestry partnership, after the Forestry Partnership Recognition and Protection was published, on August 19, 2019 in Tepian Buah Village, Berau District, East Kalimantan. The event was attended by representatives of the government of Tepian Buah Village, Segah District government, community leaders of Tepian Buah Village, the ecotourism management committee (Kelompok Sadar Wisata Allo Malau), the forest concession company (PT. Inhutani I Labanan Unit II) and FORCLIME. During the meeting, the KPH Berau Barat explained the substances of the decree of the Minister for Environment and Forestry No. SK. 8868/MENLHK-PSKL/PKPS/PSL.0/12/2018 concerning recognition and protection (KULIN) of the Forestry Partnership between the Kelompok Sadar Wisata Allo Malau and the forest concession company. In addition, the KPH Berau Barat also conveyed the details of the agreement stated in the Forest Partnership Cooperation document.

During the event, the participants also identified activities related to managing the Tembalang Waterfall, such as: demarcation of boundaries, assessment of the eco-tourism potential of the area, site design, capacity building activities and business development.

The Province Forestry Services of North Kalimantan and West Kalimantan together with FORCLIME conducted a training for representatives of Forest Management Units (KPH), Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS) from West Kalimantan and North Kalimantan, as well as representatives from the Environmental and Forestry Education and Training Center (Bogor, Makassar and Samarinda). The training, held on 5-8 August 2019 in Bogor, aims to increase the participants' knowledge in initiating business development. The activity is part of a training series related to entrepreneurship that was initiated last year, in the beginning of 2019 (trainings of Basic Entrepreneurship and Technical Guidance for the Preparation of Business Plans). During the training, participants learned about the following: Financial technology; Organization/institution; Product development; Creating a market; Digital marketing.

As part of the training, participants visited Café Malabar, which develops forest conservation activities by implementing coffee agroforestry in Pangalengan, West Java. During the discussion, participants learned how Café Malabar keeps the forest trees, and even enriches forest plants when needed. The participants very much appreciated the new input from this training, because some of them have planned to develop coffee agroforestry in their respective regions.
