The West Kalimantan Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Working Group (Pokja REDD+) together with FORCLIME conducted a multi-stakeholder meeting to develop a strategy on emission reduction intervention on September 3-6, 2019 in Kuburaya, West Kalimantan. The emission reduction intervention strategy is a detailed document on program implementation and emission reduction activities in West Kalimantan Province, which strengthened several documents that have been prepared previously, such as the Provincial Action Plan Strategy (SRAP) and the Forest Reference Emission Level (FREL). The meeting was attended by representatives of government agencies and collaborating partner institutions.

In his remarks, the Head of the West Kalimantan Provincial Public Housing, Resettlement and Environment Agency, Mr. Adiyani, recalled the role of the REDD+ Working Group to support the achievement of the vision and mission of the provincial government, low emissions development, provision of up-to-date information on land-based sectors and natural resource management and building synergies between parties.

The outcome of the meeting was the draft of the 2013-2018 Emission Reduction Report and the 2019-2024 Emission Reduction Activity Program Plan.

With the purpose of supporting the Kapuas Hulu Forest Management Unit (KPH Kapuas Hulu) to get the latest data and information on forest potential in its working area, the KPH Kapuas Hulu, supported by the West Kalimantan Forestry Service and FORCLIME, conducted a training on Assessing Forest Potential of the KPH Kapuas Hulu on 26-30 August 2019 in Putussibau, Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan. The assessment of the forest potential is carried out by comparing the results of the analysis of forest potential from imagery data and field verification (which is referred to as forest inventory). Participants were representatives from the KPHs of Kapuas Hulu Timur, Kapuas Hulu Utara, Kapuas Hulu Selatan and one intern from the University of Papua. In addition, resource persons from the Directorate of Inventory and Monitoring of Forest Resources of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry were invited.

As the result of the training, the participants are able to assess the forest potential in their working area and prepare a budget plan for undertaking a forest inventory.

Aiming to accelerate the approval of the forest management plan (RPHJP) of forest management units (KPH) in East and North Kalimantan provinces, the technical unit of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Samarinda (BPKH), supported by FORCLIME and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), conducted a workshop on 27-30 August 2019 in Jakarta. The meeting served to discuss the RPHJP documents which had not been revised after the data validation and verification process, thus, the RPHJP had not been approved. At the workshop, BPKH Samarinda invited two directorates of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KPHP and RPPWPH) to act as resource persons and mentors in the process of improving the RPHJP documents.

Referring to the Minister for Environment and Forestry P.98/MenLHK/Setjen/Kum.1/11/2018 on Procedures for Ratification of the Long-Term Forest Management Plan for Protected Forest Management Unit and Production Forest Management Unit, the improved RPHJP documents as the result of discussion, will be ready in two weeks for the approval process.
