FORCLIME, in cooperation with the NGO Working Group Tenure (WGT), conducted a Basic Mediation Training for participants from Northern, Western and Eastern Kalimantan in Bogor, from October 30 until November 2. The training serves the purpose of offering knowledge support to local conflict resolution mechanisms, raise awareness of conflict resolution methods to practitioners and train members of the West Kalimantan Conflict Resolution Desk. The 20 participants represented government officials working on social forestry (Pokja PS East Kalimantan – Kelompok Kerja Perhutanan Sosial, Bappeda, KPHs, BPSKL - Balai Perhutanan Sosial dan Kemitraan Lingkungan, DPMK - Dinas Pemberdayaan Masyarakat dan Pemerintahan Kampung) from province and district level and local NGO representatives.

The training covered principles of conflict handling and mediation practices, such as the legal background of land conflicts in Indonesia and mediation and negotiation methods for practitioners, with a special focus on natural resource and forest conflicts. As a result of the training, the participants discussed ideas and possibilities of establishing and strengthening conflict resolution mechanisms on district and province level.

The Village Government of Setulang in Malinau district, North Kalimantan, in cooperation with resource persons representing the Ecotourism Board of Setulang, the Setulang Village Forest Management board, the Deputy of Customary Leader of Oma Lung, the Province Forest Service of North Kalimantan, the Forest Management Unit of Malinau (KPH Unit X Malinau) discussed the content of a book that explains social and cultural traditions of Setulang people in regard to sustainable forest management. The focus group discussion was conducted on 31 October in Tarakan, supported by FORCLIME. The book aims to portray a clear picture about Setulang people’s ways and perspectives on forest conservation using a popular language. Hence, local experiences and knowledge can be easily understood and, moreover, can be shared with a wide range of stakeholders over generations.

The respective book, called “Tane’ Olen Setulang:  A tradition on forest conservation in Setulang village, Malinau district, North Kalimantan” will be produced in the near future.

The Provincial Forest Service of East Kalimantan conducted a three-days coaching clinic for Forest Management Units (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan-KPH) in the province on 30 October – 2 November in Samarinda, East Kalimantan. Out of 21 FMUs in East Kalimantan, nine have developed their management plan, while the rest are still on the process. Representatives from the remaining 12 KPH participated the coaching sessions. The event was held in collaboration with the regional forest planning of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, GIZ and Global

On his speech, the Head of Provincial Forestry Service said that East Kalimantan set the target to have all management plan of KPHs completed and endorsed by The Ministry of Environment and Forestry by the first semester of 2018.
