Following up on the basic business development training sessions for forest farmers groups in FORCLIME-supported villages in Papua Province which were held last July, the Papua Provincial Forestry and Environment Service (DKLH), working in conjunction with FORCLIME, held an advanced training session from 5 - 8 September 2023 in Abepura, Papua. This business development training session aimed to strengthen forest farmer groups (KTH) in their journey toward becoming independent and sustainable businesses. The event was opened by the Secretary of the Papua Province DKLH, Mr. Aries Toteles Ap, and was attended by supported forest farmers groups, as well as by facilitators and extension workers from DKLH, including from the Forest Management Unit (KPH) and the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA). The training sessions were organized by RIWANI Globe, a business and human capital development consulting agency, while the various training materials utilized during this advanced session aimed to:

1. Strengthen KPH and forest farmers groups in relation to calculations of the per-unit costs of each product, sales forecasts and the preparation of sales plans for business activities, as well as in relation to calculations of profits.
2. Provide knowledge of the types of capital that are required in order to start or develop a business and calculate the capital required by a group.
3. Increase the capacities of forest farmers and KPH in relation to business accounting.
4. Strengthen business facilitators from KPH and BBKSDA in relation to the facilitation of entrepreneurial skills and KTH business development.

As a follow-up to this advanced training session, further online assistance will be provided to KTH so that they can sustainably develop their businesses in line with assistance relating to the preparation of business plans that was originally provided online on 26 - 27 September 2023, as well as sharing sessions for training participants from Papua, West Papua and Central Sulawesi.

Following its launch by the Minister of Environment and Forestry last August, the Lore Lindu National Park Management (BBTN Lore Lindu), supported by FORCLIME, organized a training session for the
Green Youth Movement in Palu, Central Sulawesi from 25 – 26 August 2023. The Green Youth Movement comprises a basic education programme for the environmental movement and is also a forum through which young people can exchange knowledge regarding the protection and management of the environment.

The Green Youth Movement training session in Central Sulawesi was attended by 20 students from nine senior and vocational schools (SMA/SMK) located in Palu City, from which one male and one female student with the highest achievements were ultimately selected. During the training, the participants gained knowledge of the Lore Lindu National Park and the establishment of the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve and learned that the Lore Lindu National Park is the core zone of the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve.

“Awareness regarding the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve needs to be raised among all community groups, including through this activity, so that the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve will be recognized by all of these groups,” explained the Head of the BBTN Lore Lindu, Dr. Titik Wurdiningsih, during the opening of the event.

The Green Youth Movement is implemented through 100 technical implementing units of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and 15 Forest Management Units (KPH) of Perhutani, which have been designated as so-called “learning knots”. The Lore Lindu National Park Hall is one of the learning knots responsible for implementing 2023 Green Youth Movement activities within the province of Central Sulawesi.

In October, this Green Youth Movement activity will designate 10 male and 10 female students drawn from all over Indonesia as Green Ambassadors and these ambassadors will meet directly with the Minister of Environment and Forestry.

With the aim of realizing the joint activity program plan for 2023, the West Papua Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) and FORCLIME carried out a self-assessment activity on conservation areas within the scope of BBKSDA Region I Sorong from 22 - 24 August 2023 in Sorong City, Southwest Papua. Five conservation areas in total carried out the self-assessments, specifically: Pulau Misool Nature Reserve (CA), CA Pulau Salawati, CA Pantai Sausapor, CA Pegunungan Tamrau Utara and Beriat Natural Tourism Park (TWA). The purpose of this activity was to assess the effectiveness of conservation area management in order to evaluate the management efforts that have been implemented to date. The Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) was the method selected to complete these self-assessments. The event was opened by Mr Fajar F.D. Darwis S.Hut., the West Papua BBKSDA Forest Ecosystem Manager, and was attended by 35 participants, including representatives from West Papua BBKSDA, community leaders, traditional leaders, village governments from the five assessed areas and development partners (FORCLIME and FFI).

During the event, Mr. Mohamad Rizki Riadhi, S.Hut., the West Papua BBKSDA Forest Ecosystem Manager, broke down the profiles of the five conservation areas that were being assessed. Meanwhile, the self-assessment activity for conservation area management was facilitated by Dr. Ismet Khaeruddin, FORCLIME's senior advisor for biodiversity conservation.

The Directorate-General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (Ditjen KSDAE) at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry uses the METT method, which is an internationally accepted approach, to monitor and assess the overall management of conservation areas. These evaluations are carried out every two years. Assessments of the effectiveness of conservation area management are one of the performance targets for conservation area management set out under the Ditjen KSDAE's Strategic Plan (Renstra) for 2020 – 2024 and involve Activity Performance Indicators (IKK). The Directorate-General of KSDAE has determined the effectiveness values of conservation area management to monitor management effectiveness achievements within conservation areas.

The results of self-assessments will be drawn up as reports for each conservation area that will subsequently the ratified by the Director-General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. These reports will then be used as a planning guide for the West Papua BBKSDA over the next two years. In addition, these results will also serve as a reference for collaborative programmes that are undertaken with BBKSDA West Papua partners.
