Aiming to develop strategy of human resource capacity building for Forest Management Units (FMU) in West Kalimantan, the West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service in collaboration with GIZ and the Bogor Environmental and Forestry Education and Training Center (BDLHK) conducted a workshop to discuss the results of the identification of training needs assessment (TNA) for FMUs on 19 November 2019 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The purpose of the event was to validate the TNA result of the assessments that have been carried out at several KPHs in Kapuas Hulu. Through the TNA results an overview of the FMU human resource condition in West Kalimantan is obtained. The workshop was attended by 40 participants, representing the Human Resources Planning and Development Agency (BP2SDM) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the technical implementation unit of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in West Kalimantan, the West Kalimantan Provincial Government agencies, local universities, NGOs and village forest community representatives.
The Head of the West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service stated that soon the forestry service will develop a regulation to differentiate the roles of the Forestry Service and the FMU, additionally, they will prepare a roadmap for accelerating the development of independent FMUs in West Kalimantan.
Results of the workshop are the priority trainings for FMUs in West Kalimantan Province, including: applying GIS (measuring and mapping), operating Drones, marketing and promoting of Non-Timber Forest Products and Environmental Services.

In the context of adjusting the institution’s nomenclature, the latest regulations that have been issued and the government program regarding forest and land fires (Karhutla), the West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service held a focus group discussion on the revision of the 1998 regional regulation on prevention and handling of forest and land fires. This activity, supported by GIZ, was carried out on November 18, 2019 and several government agencies dealing with natural resource management, the Faculty of Forestry, Tanjungpura University, Manggala Agni Daops Pontianak and local NGOs were invited. In the discussion, the parties provided input, including measures to prevent and control forest and land fires, the participation of the parties, and to increase public awareness, post-forestry mitigation, and the article on sanctions for forest and land fire perpetrators.

Aiming to improve the competence of developing publications at local forestry agencies, the Environment and Forestry Education and Training Center (BD LHK) of Makassar together with FORCLIME and the Satu Dunia Foundation conducted a training on Effective Writing on 11-14 November 2019 in Makassar, South Sulawesi. The 15 participants represented the Bogor Environment and Forestry Training Center, the BD LHK of Makassar and the BD LHK of Samarinda and the Provincial Forestry Services of Kalimantan (east, west, north).
During the training, participants obtained information and knowledge about effective writing techniques for articles and press releases, designing publication content, basic photography practices, and designing promotional material. On the last day, participants visited the Rammang-rammang tourism area and Bantimurung National Park. After the visit, the participants will write an article related to the visited sites, as a condition to acquire the training certificate.
