The Directorate of Forest Resources Inventory and Monitoring (IPSDH), Ministry of Environment and Forestry with support from GIZ conducted a field testing on the forest inventory technical guidelines based on the decree of the Director General for Forest Resources Inventory and Monitoring P.1/2017 on Forest Protection Management Units (KPHL) and FMU Production (KPHP). The field testing was carried out for 12 days, from 30 January to 10 February. The activity aims to ensure the technical guideline can be implemented in the field in terms of technical aspects, time, equipment and personnel.

The trial was conducted in area with four different types of land covers: primary dryland forest, secondary dryland forest, primary swamp forest and secondary swamp forest in the FMU Kapuas (?) Hulu Utara. The team conducting the trial set one cluster on each of the land cover types. In each team   one team leader from IPSDH was present, just as two technical FMU advisors and four workers from local villages.

As a follow-up of the field testing, the IPSDH will conduct an FGD for inputs to improve the guideline.

The Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve in collaboration with the Faculty of Forestry of Tadulako University in Central Sulawesi, supported by GIZ, conducted a series of trainings on conservation and planting orchids, and business development for women groups in Karunia village on 18-19 January. The purpose of this activity is to support the conservation of orchids, improving skills of women in planting orchids and business development so that the participants can create additional income for their households. From Karunia village, 28 women joined the training. Previously, similar trainings have been conducted with 28 women in Rejeki village.

Trainings will also be carried out in other villages in the area, such as Berdikari, Ampera and Makmur; which are located close to the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve.

After the training, every women group will establish and maintain a pilot nursery of orchids in their respective villages. Following the wishes of the village government and the women groups, there will be an orchid festival for promotion and assessment of the practices of each women grousp at the end of the facilitation process in March.

The Batu Rajang community prepared a map for a proposed forestry partnership and sent it to the forest concession, PT Inhutani I Labanan, which is located in the area of the Production Forest Management Unit (KPHP) of Berau Barat, East Kalimantan on 9 January. The developed map follows the MoU on forest tenure conflict resolution within the forest management unit. An area of 1,705 Ha has been agreed upon between a forest concession company and the Batu Rajang community represented by three forest farmer groups (Bangen Tawai, Pebeka Tawai, Tiga Tawai), as a site for the implementation of forestry partnership activities, such as agroforestry, medicine plant and silvo pasture. The KPHP Berau Barat leads the forest tenurial conflict resolution process with support from GIZ.

Once the legal basis is fulfilled, the next step will be to develop a management plan for the partnership area.
