The East Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service conducted a dialogue to achieve a common understanding about the implementation of the Minister for Home Affairs Regulation No. 12/2017 concerning the establishment and classification of district services and the Local Technical Implementation Unit. The event, supported by GIZ and several partners of the East Kalimantan Forestry Service, was held on 7 December in Samarinda. 50 participants represented the East Kalimantan Forestry Service, Forest Management Units in East Kalimantan, the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Samarinda, international agencies and NGOs.
Issues raised during the dialogue included: (1) By law, the provincial government of East Kalimantan is allowed to establish several branches of the Forest Service and many local UPTs as long as the funds of the province government are sufficient; (2) The Forestry Service budget for 2018 is very limited with approximately 7 billion rupiah.
Finally, the participants agreed to form a small team consisting of the Provincial Forestry Service and several partner institutions to have a dialogue with the East Kalimantan Provincial Secretary regarding the budget increase for the forestry sector and the development of KPH institutions.
