After a study visit on fire prevention and peatland management in Central Kalimantan, the Kubu Raya Forest Management Unit (KPH) conducted a meeting to evaluate the study tour results and to determine further steps for the Forest Fire Brigade (Brigade Karhutla) on April 16 in Pontianak. The meeting held at KPH Kubu Raya Office was attended by Brigade Karhutla and Kubu Raya staff, and accompanied by an Integrated Fire Management Expert from the consulting firm EcoConsult, supported by GIZ.

Lessons learned from the study tour included: a sign board  indicating the height of peat water as an indicator of drought; techniques in constructing a well to provide water supply during fires; agroforestry techniques to optimize peatland management and early warning communication systems.

Inputs from the meeting include improving the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). In addition, further plans are to synergize the Kubu Raya KPH program with the district government, preparing sign boards for early warning, just as demonstration plots of agroforestry systems on peatland by combining forest trees and seasonal crops to increase the community’s economic income.

On 18.04.2018 the ‘’Forum KPH’’ for Forest Management Units (FMU) in West Kalimantan took place in Pontianak. The meeting of heads of FMU with approximately 35 participants ensures the regular exchange of current development processes within the FMUs as well as subject-specific topics.

Supported by FORCLIME, the current state of medium-term FMU management planning (RPHJP Planning) and the challenges in the finalization and approval process were discussed and documented to accelerate the planning process. In this context, the participants discussed the final area delineation of the FMUs as well as the possibilities of a reasonable relocation of partial areas within the individual FMUs. This should ensure an easier management of the large areas.

Two FMUs with near-completion RPHJP management planning are supposed to participate in a pre-assessment of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) in May 2018 as part of the final RPHJP approval process.

Another focus of the current ‘’Forum KPH’’ is the formation of resorts (sub-units of the FMUs). For this purpose, the FMUs received a technical overview of the process of providing office space and setting up infrastructure as needed.

In addition, representatives of two NGOs (WWF Indonesia, Agency IDH) promoted opportunities for sustainable cooperation in the development of new business fields and collaboration with communities in social forestry models.

The West Kalimantan Working Group on REDD+ (Pokja REDD+ Kalbar) conducted a workshop on Mainstreaming REDD+ in the context of Sustainable Development in West Kalimantan Province on 19 April. The workshop was aimed to share the progress of REDD+ initiatives implementation at the sub-national level, and to raise awareness on regulations of the Minister of Environment and Forestry related to the implementation of REDD+. 120 participants representing the regional officials of the West Kalimantan government agencies attended the workshop. The meeting was supported by the IJREDD (Indonesia-Japan REDD project), IDH and FORCLIME.

The outcome of the workshop is the REDD+ implementation plan in West Kalimantan Province, which will be adopted in the regional development plan (RPJMD).
