On April 11-14, Kubu Raya Forest Management Unit (KPH Kubu Raya) visited Central Kalimantan for the purpose of improving their practical knowledge on forest and land fire prevention and peatland management. The site’s name is Jumpun Pembelom, which means Hutan Sumber Kehidupan (“source of life” forest), located in Pulang Pisau District, Central Kalimantan. 12 representatives of the Kubu Raya Forest Fire Brigade participated in this visit, and were accompanied by an Integrated Fire Management Expert from the consulting company, EcoConsult, supported by GIZ.
During the visit, participants gained knowledge of the history of peat forest management, peatland fire management systems, peatland economic resilience programmes and a quick respond system to forest and land fires (sistem reaksi cepat karhutla). The participants also exercised drilling wells for water sources during a fire and visited a site for integrative peatland agriculture. During the trip, the participants visited the office of Manggala Agni Palangkaraya to study the local coordination system of forest and land fire prevention and the practice of techniques for land clearing without burning.
After the study visit, the KPH Kubu Raya Forest Fire Brigade will undertake an internal evaluation in order to select practices undertaken in Central Kalimantan that can be applied in the KPH Kubu Raya.
