Over the last year FORCLIME has been supporting the provincial government of North Kalimantan to work towards a solution for maintaining both the economic and ecological benefits of mangrove forests in the Kayan Delta, an area in which shrimp farms can be found in officially designated forest areas. FORCLIME has been training fisherman/farmers on how to map their shrimp farms using the GPS function in their smart-phones. Once data regarding shrimp farm ownership became available, FORCLIME and the local forestry services proposed to turn the shrimp farms located in the forest area into a social forestry scheme based on silvo-aquaculture. In silvo-aquaculture, shrimp farms and mangroves are not mutually exclusive but can co-exist within the same area. This approach has been picked up positively and the provincial and national government are now in the stage of developing more concrete plans to establish the social forestry scheme.

The next step is to develop the local capacity of forestry services and local fishermen on how to apply silvo-aquaculture in the Kayan Delta. With GIZ’s experience in silvo-aquaculture in other regions such as the Mekong Delta in Vietnam this will hopefully turn into a successful endeavor resulting in the reforestation of large areas of mangroves.

The Forestry Service Office of West Kalimantan in collaboration with GIZ conducted a three-day workshop, the “Forestry Stakeholder Forum” on March 7-9, 2018 in Pontianak. The aim of this workshop is to promote communication and coordination as well as commitment among forestry stakeholders in preparation of the forestry planning, which will take place in West Kalimantan.

The workshop was attended by about 100 participants from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) and its technical unit in the province, provincial officials, Head of Forest Management Unit (FMU), and NGOs.

In his speech the Head of the Forestry Provincial Office addressed challenges and issues of forestry in West Kalimantan, focusing on the Agrarian Reform (TORA) and Social Forestry and emphasized Forest Management by FMUs.

The results of this workshop are the formulation of existing challenges in forestry and the prioritization of forestry planning in West Kalimantan.

The Provincial Forestry Service of West Kalimantan conducted a workshop on monitoring and controlling fire on peatland ecosystems on 7-8 February 2018 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. The event aims to improve the capacity of the fire task force (Brigdalkarhutla) of the forest management unit (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan – KPH) of Kubu Raya on how to manage forest and land fire related to peat ecosystems and water table management. The workshop, which was supported by GIZ, was opened by the Head of Provincial Forestry Service, whereas the keynote was delivered by the Director of forest and land fire control, Ministry of Environment and Forestry. In addition to the fire task force of KPH Kubu Raya, more officials and stakeholders related to forest and land fire management in West Kalimantan Province participated.

Resource persons of the event were officials from the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG), namely Mr Hartono Prawiratmadja, Mr Budi Wardhana, Mr Alue Dohong. Additionally, resource persons from universities, such as Prof. Bambang Hero Saharjo (Bogor Agricultural University - IPB), Dr. Achmad Kurnain (University of Lambung Mangkurat, South Kalimantan), and Prof. Dr. Gusti Anshari (University of Tanjungpura, West Kalimantan) participated in the event.

As a follow-up of this event, the impact of the implementation of knowledge from the workshop will be evaluated. Also, the idea  to carry out similar workshops for other KPHs has been formulated.
