To determine the potential for the production of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) within the forest management unit (KPH) area in Papua Province, the Papua Forestry and Environment Service (DKLH), working in collaboration with the University of Papua and supported by FORCLIME, conducted a recent inventory of NTFPs over six months from July - December 2023. The study area included Forest Management Units (KPHPs) in Jayapura, Sarmi, Keerom, Lintas Sarmi Mamberamo Raya, Yapen, Waropen, as well as Forestry and Environment Service Branches (CDKLHs) in Jayapura, Sarmi, Keerom, Mamberamo Raya and Biak Numfor Protected Forest Management Units (KPHL). In addition to determining the potential for NTFPs, the study also aimed to increase community capacity in terms of efforts to empower the green economy through the downstream of NTFPs.
The study results were then discussed on 13 March 2024 in Jayapura, Papua. The discussion was led by the Secretary of the Papua Provincial Forestry and Environment Service and attending participants who, in addition to representatives from the Papua DKLH and the University of Papua, also included representatives from each forest management unit whose areas had been used as a study location, as well as development partners of Papua Province, including FORCLIME, Samdhana and Econusa.
From this study, initial data on the potentials and descriptions of non-timber forest products that have and have not been managed were produced. This data will subsequently be compiled into a book on non-timber forest product potential within Papua Province, which should prove useful in terms of the planning and management of non-timber forest products, as well as during the formulation of strategies and policies aimed at the development of non-timber forest products within Papua Province.

In order to report on the implementation of FORCLIME activities during 2023 and also to present FORCLIME's work plan for 2024, the Forestry Planning Bureau at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), as FORCLIME's Project Executing Agency (PEA), held a hybrid project technical committee (PTC) meeting on 21 February 2024. The meeting was opened by the Head of the MoEF’s Planning Bureau, Dr. Apik Karyana, and was attended by PTC members and various parties who were representing Echelon II of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The meeting was also attended by working partners in FORCLIME working areas in Central Sulawesi Province (Lore Lindu National Park; the Forestry Service), in Papua Province (the Forestry and Environment Service; the Center for Conservation and Natural Resources [BBKSDA] in Papua), in Southwest Papua Province (the Environment, Forestry and Land Service; the Center for Conservation and Natural Resources [BBKSDA] in Southwest Papua).
Dr. Apik commenced his speech by reflecting on the long-established Indonesian-German cooperation. "We have both witnessed how the close cooperation between the two countries has produced significant results through the Social Forestry Development Program in Sanggau, West Kalimantan. This initiative has become a milestone in the history of the Social Forestry practices that we are continuing to develop today, a synergy of progress and sustainability which is our common heritage.”
During the meeting, working partners at the national and regional levels expressed their gratitude for FORCLIME's support, including the Head of the Human Resources Training Center for Environment and Forestry, Dr. Kusdamayanti. During her speech, Dr. Kusdamayanti explained that until 2023 the collaboration with GIZ had greatly helped the Training Center, particularly in relation to the development of eLearning involving hardware, software and brainware that was carried out through workshops, training sessions and activities in the field.
In terms of the work plan for 2024, which is FORCLIME 4.0’s final year, all of the relevant partners have expressed the hope that the remaining time until December 2024 will continue to be utilized in order to maximize support for partnering work programs at both the national and regional levels. In addition, the partners also hope that the follow-up program, namely FORCLIME Reloaded, will continue to support the strategic plan (Renstra) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, as well as related agencies across each of the various provinces in which FORCLIME works.

In 2021, the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) in Papua, working in conjunction with FORCLIME, agreed to support the A'Memay Nature Lovers Group located in Tablasupa Village, Jayapura Regency, Papua Province. The A'Memay manages the area of forest around the Mount Cycloop Nature Reserve buffer zone, a tourist area of special interest to birdwatchers as it is home to the legendary bird of paradise.
In an effort to support preparations for the Tablasupa Village Ecotourism Development Plan document, the BBKSDA, supported by FORCLIME, held a recent FGD that aimed to educate the local community about legal access to forest resources and their benefits for traditional communities, particularly through social forestry schemes. The FGD was held in Tablasupa Village on 26 January 2024 and was opened by the acting Head of Region IV Section Sarmi, Mr Purnama, who is also the Head of Moy Resort. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Social Forestry and Environmental Partnership Center (BPSKL) Maluku Papua, as well as by a village government representative, specifically the Chair of the Village Consultative Body (Bamuskam), and also by traditional and youth leaders from Tablasupa, the Chair of the Tablasupa church congregation, administrators and members of the A'Memay and Tablasupa communities.
During the event, FORCLIME's Strategic Area Manager for Sustainable Forest Management, Mr. Mohammad Sidiq, facilitated FGD participants as they addressed the development of a strategic plan for the utilization of forest resources and associated benefits for traditional communities through the application of the SWOT approach. This approach involves the identification of relevant strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and it is hoped that the A'Memay will ultimately be able to develop a strategic management plan for the area.
