Tropical forest honey production constitutes a significant contributor to the local economy in Kapuas Hulu district. In order to increase the locally added value through efficient processing with consistent quality of this NTFP (Non Timber Forest Product) the installation a honey drying chamber was supported and financed in a joint effort between two separate GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) projects, namely FORCLIME and Electrification through Renewable Energy (ELREN) (“Green Chiller”). This unit has the capacity to reduce moisture content of 200 kg honey from the natural 26% down to the required national standard of 18% within 24 hours.

During the occasion of a project visit from a delegation from German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and GIZ to Kapuas Hulu the honey drying chamber was officially handed over by FORCLIME Programe Director Georg Buchholz to the Honey Production and NTFP usage centre (Sentra Wirausaha Produksi dan Pemanfaatan Komoditas Hasil Hutan Bukan Kayu). For the future institutional development of the Honey Production Centre and product marketing integrated with the Kapuas Hulu Biosphere Reserve will be supported.

The revised version of the Province Forestry Planning has been issued through the Governor’s regulation No. 55/2018 on the revision of the attachment of the Governor’s regulation No. 19/2012 on the Province Forest Planning 2011-2030. The revision is undertaken to adjust to current changes, including shifting authorities within the forestry sector due to Law 23/2014; the establishment of the North Kalimantan province, which reduces the size of East Kalimantan; and the designation of the spatial planning of East Kalimantan province 2016-2036. The process of the forestry planning revision is led by the Provincial Forestry Service and supported by its partners, such as FORCLIME (GIZ) and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

With the intention of strengthening capacity of forest management units (KPH) in North Kalimantan province on preparing business development plans, FORCLIME together with Swarna Nusantara Indonesia organized a coaching session. The coaching session, which is part of a training series (basic, coaching, advanced) aimed to prepare participants to take the advanced training prior to the selection process. Representatives from five KPHs in North Kalimantan and local communities joined the two-day training on 18-19 February 2019 in Nunukan district, North Kalimantan. The training provides the tools for a successful production, processing and marketing of selected commodities that promote sustainable forest management and improve the welfare of local communities.

The Head of KPH Nunukan, Mr Bastiang, said that the coaching session is useful to accomplish our tasks and assignments. Furthermore, he said “we believe the application from the training will lead us to become an independent KPH”.

As part of the training, participants visited a community forest site, HKM Floresta, to see a community forest for which a business plan had already been developed. Mr Abdul Erwansyah - a forestry extension worker and HKM Floresta representative – announced that after participating in the previous training series Floresta realized the big opportunity to market their products. "This training has opened our minds in regards of producing good quality. The training provides a chance to share knowledge that generated ideas to develop a marketing strategy”, he said.
