FORCLIME held a talk show at the Climate Change Indonesia 2011 Education Forum & Expo at the Jakarta Convention Center. Topic discussed was “The Role of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation”. The discussion covered the relation between Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) and sustainable forest management. In that context there was special focus on Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) using mobile cable yarding systems including their potential, cost/benefit analysis and challenges for implementation.  The guest speaker at the talk show was Dr. Yosep Ruslim, an expert on RIL and forest management planning.

Additionally, FORCLIME actively contributed on the Ministry of Forestry’s booth at the Climate Change expo. The Ministry of Forestry presented information related to the current status of REDD+ and REDD+ architecture.

The FORCLIME Financial Cooperation (FC) module was officially launched in a kick-off meeting chaired by the Senior Adviser to the Minister of Forestry, I. Made Subadia Gelgel. The FC module provides a grant of 20 million Euro for REDD+ Demonstration Activities at three districts in Kalimantan (Kapuas Hulu, Malinau and Berau).

Germany supports Indonesia's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the forestry sector through the Forests and Climate Change Programme (FORCLIME) in two modules, namely Technical Cooperation (TC) implemented by the German International Cooperation (GIZ) and Financial Cooperation (FC) implemented through KfW (German Development Bank). The GIZ TC Module was launched in 2009 and supports policy and strategy development, sustainable forest management and FMU establishment, and biodiversity conservation.

“Dynamics, Issues and Challenges of Initiating Village Forest Development in Kalimantan” – this was the theme of a sharing lessons learned workshop hosted by GIZ FORCLIME, WWF Kaltim and the East Kalimantan Regional Forest Council (DKD) on 13 and 14 April in Samarinda. 60 participants included village representatives from several districts, staff of NGOs involved in supporting Village Forest (Hutan Desa) development, staff of district and provincial forest administrations and of regional technical units of the Ministry of Forestry as well as private sector representatives, GIZ experts and academics. Additionally, also attended delegation from Jambi Province where the village forest concept has already gained considerable ground.

Discussions centered on experiences with the legal and administrative process of establishing Village Forest following the relevant regulations and guidelines, on lessons learned from initiating and facilitating the process and included analysis of the Village Forest concept and policy itself.

Recommendations were developed in three “clinics” that the organisers had set up for in-depth discussions among participants. They were targeted at 1) central government, 2) district and provincial governments and 3) NGOs and communities.
