Ir. Agus Widiyarto, MBA representing the head of Biro Perencanaan, Dr. Hilman Nugroho opened the kick-off workshop on the land-use change analysis for the districts of Malinau and Kapuas Hulu. The workshop took place in Pontianak on the 6th and 7th of April 2011.

The main objectives of the land-use change analysis are:

  • to analyse the dynamics of the land-use changes and related conversion of forests since 1990,
  • to establish a historical Reference Emission Baseline (REL) - tier 2 - for the two districts,
  • to identify the types, status (good, degraded, fragmented) and size of the forests in the designated KPH areas and
  • to estimate the biomass and carbon stocks of the forests in the KPH areas.

These data serve for the development of REDD+ concepts and strategies at the district level and are needed to plan and implement demonstration activities. Related to the demonstration activities Mr. Sean Foley, Principal Adviser of FORCLIME’s Financial Cooperation (FC) module, presented the objectives and planned activities of the FC module.

An exchange of information between the provinces and districts took place and the collection of additional data required to estimate the management potential of KPH areas was discussed.

Survey teams will collect the necessary data, and it is expected that the results will be available in June for Kapuas Hulu, and in October for Malinau respectively. Until the end of the year the management potential of the KPH areas in Kapuas Hulu and Malinau will be determined. This will constitute an important milestone for formulating multi-functional management plans for the KPH areas.

More than 50 participants from national, provincial and district government institutions and from national and international NGOs attended the workshop.
