The Malinau Forestry Service and the Production Forest Management Unit (KPHP) in Malinau conducted a training for village officials and members of village forest management unit to enhance their capacity in making maps related to forest management. 17 people attended the training that carried out on 25 to 30 July 2016 in Setulang village in Malinau District, North Kalimantan.

On the training, participants improved their knowledge on how to use a compass, GPS and clinometer. Moreover, they also enhanced their capacity in field data collection and analysis. In addition, participants created a 3-dimensional map of Setulang village area.

The Head of Setulang Village, Saleh Wang, said that he will establish a survey team for mapping Setulang natural resources, such as clean water sources, existing community’s plantation, etc. Budget estimation to carry out the survey will be submitted to the village budget plan in 2017.

The Training Center of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry conducted a workshop on coaching for Widyaiswara (lecturer) of the ministry on 27 – 29 July in Bogor. The workshop aimed to improve knowledge of the lecturers on the concept and methodology of coaching to support learning targets achievements from the new-selected civil servants and leader trainings. This event, which held in collaboration with the State Administration Agency (Lembaga Administrasi Negara – LAN) and FORCLIME, was attended by 20 lecturers of the Training Center. Resource persons of the workshop were experts from LAN.

The Head of the Center for Policy Analysis from LAN emphasized that the roles of a coach are more to giving motivation and providing advice rather than delivering solutions. Therefore, a coach has to have skills in obtaining information from the advised person and be able to listen to him or her.

During the workshop, participants obtained knowledge on topics such as concept and processes of coaching, the roles of a coach, asking techniques and actual issues in coaching.

On his closing speech, the Head of Training Center promised to follow up the workshop results in the internal meeting on preparation for the new selected civil servants and the leader trainings.

On June 17th, 2016 GIZ FORCLIME organized a presentation with subsequent discussion round for relevant stakeholders who work with the ‘cut control mechanism’ i.e. all regulations related to the establishment, regulation, and monitoring of the annual cutting target (JPT) and Reduced Impact Logging – Carbon (RIL-C). Based on the RIL-C study carried out by FORCLIME and the Tropical Forest Foundation (TFF) in the concession of PT Inhutani II in Malinau, North Kalimantan, lessons learned were presented to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), particularly the Directorate of Production Forest Management, the Directorate of Forestry Revenues and Forest Product Circulation and the Directorate of Climate Change Mitigation.

The discussion round covered the following guiding questions: How could the utilization standard be optimized in terms of utilizing the main stem volume more effectively? Together with the review of the Forest Management Inventory Guideline on FMU level, which options are there to improve the inventory requirements within active forest concessions? Furthermore the spectrum of the cut control mechanism and potentials for silviculture in production forests were put on the table. One of the questions was whether there is a need for reviewing the current silvicultural guideline both in terms of establishing clear guidance for logging contractors, though FMUs in the future, and also in terms of supporting synergies between FSC (including RIL) and SVLK/ PHPL certification to ensure wider international market access for green products.
