FORCLIME collaborates with the local radio station Pro 1 RRI Samarinda, East Kalimantan to share the progress of the Forest Management Unit (FMU) development as well as efforts for mitigation and adaptation to climate change in East Kalimantan Province with the wider public. These topics are discussed during a radio talk show, which is aired on the frequency 97.6 FM every second and fourth Thursday of the month between December 2015 and May 2016, from 09:00 to 10:00 pm. The talk show features resource persons from different institutions in East Kalimantan who are experts in the fields discussed. Institutions represented include district forestry agencies, the Climate Council of East Kalimantan Province, FMUs located in East Kalimantan, and other organizations involved in efforts for climate change mitigation/adaptation and reducing emissions from the forestry sector. The radio listeners can interact directly with the resource persons via a phone number provided by Pro 1 RRI Samarinda.
The talk show program aims to support governments at provincial and district levels in the dissemination of information to increase public awareness on the values and benefits of forests and the role and functions of different stakeholders in mitigation and adaptation to climate change, good forest governance and sustainable development. The experts also present on-going activities, existing policies and strategies, or opportunities and challenges for the future. In addition, the radio program aims to disseminate information on the FMU development process, and on achievements of each FMU in East Kalimantan.

From January 25th to 26th forest certification received a boost through the International Wood Trade Event which took place in Surabaya under the motto: “Indonesian tropical hardwood products: Sustainable. Quality. Guaranteed.”
The Indonesian Association of Forest Concessionaires (APHI) together with The Borneo Initiative (TBI), of which both are GIZ FORCLIME collaboration partners in the strategic area of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM), organized 2016’s event with particular emphasis on the environmental and social dimension in SFM. A great number of stakeholders ranging from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), NGOs such as Rainforest Alliance and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), as well as 19 overseas timber trading companies and 28 Indonesian wood processing industries attended the event.
Currently the Indonesian wood industry manufactures a variety of products such as wood panels (plywood), veneer, indoor flooring, outdoor decking, truck flooring, construction wood, doors and window frames, scantlings, and garden furniture.
The consensus reached among overseas traders and Indonesian producers was that quality and legal origin are key factors for building sustainable long-term business relations, increase trust towards Indonesian wood products among buyers from Europe and the US and thereby enlarge Indonesia’s market share in international markets.
GIZ FORCLIME is supporting the strengthening of SFM and REDD+ capacities in Indonesia, particularly on FMU level. Both the Timber Legality Verification ‘Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu’ (SVLK) and the Forest Stewardship Council’ (FSC) certification as well as Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) are effective parts of the SFM framework which is realized in collaboration with TBI and APHI amongst others.
