For the purpose of sustainable utilization of non-timber forest products, the West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service conducted a workshop on the Policy on Utilization and Trading of Non-Timber Forest Products of light red meranti (tengkawang) on August 30 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. 31 participants representing the technical units of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, tengkawang practitioners and farmers in West Kalimantan participated in the workshop. The event was organized by the West Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service together with FORCLIME and the Kalimantan Tengkawang Network.

The workshop aims to discuss policies related to the Tengkawang trade system. In addition, this meeting was also to share experience of the Tengkawang Kalimantan Network in tengkawang processing and marketing.

Next to economic value, Tengkawang nut has an important cultural meaning for locals and is referred to as the “tree of life”. The nut can be processed into vegetable oil, while its derivatives can be used as basic ingredients for producing  food, lubricants, waxes, medicine and cosmetics. Tengkawang/meranti tree which is an endemic plant of West Kalimantan is the species of red meranti (Shorea stenoptera).

In addition to data and information on tengkawang production from various places in West Kalimantan, participants also made a list of recommendations related to the new Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P.20/MENHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/6/2018 concerning Protected Plants and Wildlife Species. In the previous regulation (PP 7/1999 concerning Protected of Plant and Wildlife Species), tengkawang tree was included as protected species, however, it has been excluded in the current ministerial regulation.

With the purpose of confirming the operation of the Forest Management Units (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan-KPH) systematically and with clear targets, the provincial government of East Kalimantan prepares a road map for the acceleration of KPH Development towards an independent KPH. The road map, which was declared in the Governor’s decree No. 522/K.269/2018, will be used as a guideline for all parties to support the acceleration of KPH development in East Kalimantan. The preparation of the KPH Road Map is supported by development partners (GIZ, the Global Green Growth Institute, The Nature Conservancy, WWF-Indonesia and the Regional Council on Climate Change) in East Kalimantan, through the KPH Center as the coordination and consolidation platform for KPH development.

The KPH Roadmap entails guidance for implementation, strategy and a programme and action plan for accelerating the KPH development to achieve independent KPHs. This includes the development and improvement of infrastructure, investment, human resources, monitoring, supervision and coaching. In addition, this Roadmap also provides guidance on criteria and indicators of independent KPHs based on the main tasks and functions of the KPH.

Aiming to set up independent Forest Management Units (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan-KPH), the North Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service conducted a training on Basic Entrepreneurship for KPHs on 30 July-3 August in Tarakan, North Kalimantan. The training aimed to improve knowledge and skills to identify business potential, analyze value chains and develop business plans. 25 participants represented five KPHs, the social forestry licensed Forest Farmers Group (KTH), the Environment and Forestry Education and Training Center of Samarinda, the Directorate General of Protection Forest Management Units and local NGOs. The training was carried out in collaboration with FORCLIME and the North Kalimantan KPH Forum.

During the training, participants practiced organizing interviews related to value chains with  entrepreneurs working with eucalyptus oil, shrimp, swallow nests, and ecotourism. As the final programme, participants visited the eucalyptus oil industry that was initiated by the KPH Tarakan.

The training will be followed up with mentoring sessions to prepare a business plan, additionally, advanced training on entrepreneurship will be conducted in October 2018.
