With the aim of improving forest management skills, particularly on forest mapping and data management, FORCLIME supported a training on Geographic Information System (GIS) for the technical staff of the Forest Management Units (FMUs), the Central Sulawesi Grand Park (Tahura Sulawesi Tengah) and Provincial Forest Service. The training was attended by 31 participants and was held in Kapopo-Ngatabaru Central Sulawesi Grand Park on 17 – 22 April.

On his opening speech, the Head of Provincial Forest Service, Dr. Nahardi, said that GIS is essential for managing FMUs more efficiently in the future, therefore, participants need to acquire sound knowledge on GIS. Furthermore, Dr. Nahardi visited the training twice to show his support to the participants.

In addition to organizing the training, FORCLIME`s GIS Adviser, Ms Klothilde Sikun, delivered a training on basic GIS tools, including GIS principles, introduction to ArcMAP and ArcCATALOG, rectification, creating spatial data, editing vector data, layouting and printing, and using Global Positioning System (GPS) tool. At the end of the successful training, the enthusiastic participants asked for an advanced training on GIS.

The Directorate of Forest Land Use Planning and Establishment of Forest Area Management, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and FORCLIME organized a workshop on Forest Governance and Forest Management Planning on 29-31 March 2017 in Bogor. Objective of the workshop was to prepare the personnel of the ministry’s technical unit at the province (Balai Pemantapan Kawasan Hutan - BPKH) and the Forest Management Unit (FMU) with information concerning procedure of forest governance and forest management planning. In addition, participants also obtained the latest information related to FMU development in Indonesia. 60 participants attended the workshop and represented FMU, provincial forestry services and BPKH from different parts of Indonesia.

Facilitators and resource persons during this event were officials from the Directorate General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Governance and the Training Center for Human Resource of MoEF. Participants obtained knowledge on: FMU development policy, Forest Planning, Application of GIS in Forest Planning, Forest Inventory and Social Culture at FMU administration, Forest Governance and Forest Management Planning.

Participants, particularly new officials at the FMU said that the workshop was very useful for them, however that the time was very limited. They hope this activity can be followed up with coaching in the field (including by BPKH) in order to prepare visionary and realistic FMU management plans, which will lead towards  strong and self-sustaining FMUs in the future.
