The Sebijak Forestry Institute (University of Gajah Mada) together with FORCLIME organize an online course on "Forest and Nature Conservation: Achieving Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs). This activity aims to provide understanding on the role of forests and natural resource conservation in achieving the sustainable development agenda. In addition, the course is developed based on the lessons and learning process of FORCLIME phase 3 implementation (2017-2020). The online course will be conducted in two batches, 19 – 21 January and 26 – 28 January 2021 covers six topics, namely: Introduction on sustainability on forests and SDGs; Climate change and conservation in global development discourses; Forest conservation – biodiversity and environmental services; Forests roles in poverty alleviation; Improving HR capacity at forestry sector; Forest policy in achieving SDGs.

The webinar event is also available for public, however, only 40 participants for the online course that should follow the following requirements: University students; Has commitment to follow all of training subjects. While for webinar participants have be university student of any subject and select one of the topics.

"This programme has consistently supported Indonesia in the development of the environmental and forestry sector to date and for the future," said the Head of Planning Bureau of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), Dr. Ayu Dewi Utari, in her opening speech at the closing workshop of the FORCLIME TC Phase-3 on December 10, 2020 in Jakarta. The event was held in mixed sessions virtually and face-to-face, and attended by almost 100 participants from three locations, namely Jakarta, Samarinda (East Kalimantan) and Pontianak (West Kalimantan). Furthermore, Dr Ayu said that many significant achievements have been made possible by FORCLIME TC. Among them were the preparation of the MoEF’s Strategic Plan (Renstra) for 2020-2024, Gender Mainstreaming and SDGs (sustainable development goals). Moreover, related to gender issues FORCLIME had facilitated the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to achieve the highest award, namely the “Mentor” level. Before concluding her remarks, Dr Ayu advised that the experiences gained during the implementation of the FORCLIME programme from 2009 to 2020 could be used as lessons learned for implementing FORCLIME 4.0 in new locations in eastern Indonesia, as a continuation of FORCLIME phase 3, and always consistently supporting the MoEF at the national and provincial, district and site levels.

At the event FORCLIME presented short films about FORCLIME’s activities and a learning book on the implementation of FORCLIME in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. In addition, broadcasting testimonials from partners in West Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan where they conveyed their expectations for “more forclimes” in other future cooperation. Before the event ended participants were entertained through an interactive game, where the 1st and 2nd place winners were awarded to experiencing sitting on the “FORCLIME bench” under the trees at Desa Wisata Setulang, North Kalimantan.

The Environment and Forestry Service of West Kalimantan Province through the West Kalimantan REDD Working Group (REDD WG), supported by FORCLIME, conducted a meeting presenting the 2020 performance of REDD WG and preparing the 2021 work plan on 15-16 December 2020 in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. This event, which was carried out online and offline, was officially opened by the Head of the Environment and Forestry Service, Mr. H. Adi Yani, MH. He was accompanied by the REDD WG Chairman who delivered a speech regarding the commitment of West Kalimantan province to contribute to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation that have been implemented since 2012 when the REDD WG was established.

During the meeting, the REDD WG presented its 2020 activities in achieving emission reduction targets including formulating new regulation and revising the old ones, revision of the REDD WG structure, preparing governor's regulation on emission reduction targets, increasing the capacity of FMUs related to forestry and climate change, strengthening the communication network of the parties, as well as the development of climate change financing alternatives through several schemes such as the preparation of proposals for the Green Climate Fund.

In addition, the meeting also discussed the 2021 work plan to complete the province's commitment to achieving emission reduction targets as outlined in the West Kalimantan Emission Reduction Action Plan Strategy.
