FORCLIME once again organised an internship programme for students in 2022. The intake this time around included four students from Papua Province and six students from West Papua Province. This intake breaks down into one student from Cenderawasih University, two students from the University of Ottow Geissler Papua, one student from Musamus University in Merauke and six students from the University of Papua.

To present its various programmes and activities, FORCLIME held an online and offline introductory training session for interns from 27 - 30 September 2022 in Jayapura City. The objective of this event was to disseminate a deeper knowledge of FORCLIME and several supporting topics, including; development synergy within the environment and forestry sector in Tanah Papua by the Planning Bureau of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) and the development of a Forest Management Unit by the Papua Province Forestry and Environment Service.

Meanwhile, FORCLIME's technical advisors delivered a number of presentations that addressed various strategic areas, including the development of Forest Management Units (KPH), biodiversity conservation, social forestry, climate change mitigation, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gender mainstreaming. In addition, the interns also receive guidance and information on the financial administration system at GIZ and knowledge management at FORCLIME.

During the training, the Heads of Study Programmes at the University of Papua and the University of Cenderawasih offered various directions regarding the Independent Learning - Independent Campus (Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka-MBKM) and the reporting system of each university. In addition, the two heads also explained the assessment system for internship students, whereby courses that are taken are adjusted to the activities that will be carried out during FORCLIME internships.

As part of the training agenda, the interns conducted field visits as an introduction to FORCLIME's activities with partners in a supported village. The interns visited the Dambu Kahbrai Orchid Gallery in Dosai Village, West Sentani Sub-District. This village is one of the buffer villages for the Cycloop Nature Reserve, one of the conservation areas in Papua Province that must be protected due to its unique collection of flora and fauna and ecosystem. In order to protect the area’s flora, particularly orchids, the Papua Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) in CA Cyloop has been providing assistance within the village of Dosai through the formation of a group of women orchid cultivators.

In addition to reducing pressures on orchids within the CA Cycloop Nature Reserve, this activity is also expected to provide additional income for the community. The marketing of orchid products in Dosai now involves the utilisation of online marketing. BBKSDA Papua Province has also assisted orchid farmer groups with the marketing licensing process and through supervision so that the cultivation of orchids, as developed by the community, is carried out in line with principles of sustainability.

After completion of the introductory training, interns will be placed in FORCLIME-supported villages in Papua Province and West Papua Province for periods of approximately five to six months.

In order to ensure that the biosphere reserve can function in line with its designated purposes, Man and the Biosphere United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (MAB-UNESCO) conducts periodic reviews of biosphere reserves every 10 years. This periodic review process is set to be implemented within the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve (LLBR) in 2023 or 2024.

With the purpose of preparation for the periodic review of the LLBR, comprehensive data and information on the activities being undertaken in each zone (core, buffer and transition) are required. FORCLIME is supporting the Coordination and Communication Forum for LLBR Management in relation to the collection of data and the synchronization of integrated programmes in the LLBR during the 2021 - 2024 period. Against this background, an activity was held on Monday, 26 September 2022 at the Office of the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) for Central Sulawesi Province and was opened by Dr. Ir. Christina Shandra Tobondo, MT., the Head of Bappeda of Central Sulawesi Province, who also serves as Chair of the Coordination and Communication Forum for LLBR Management.

During the event, Regional Apparatus Organizations operating within the LLBR were invited to exchange data and information relating to the programs that are being implemented in each zone. In addition, discussions were also held to assess any obstacles that are being faced during the implementation of activities within the LLBR area. Through this activity, sustainable development activity data will be collected from various parties and is expected to provide an overview of the current state of the biosphere reserve, as well as inputs for the preparation of Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve action plans in the future.

With the goal of coordinating planning and controlling environmental and forestry development within the Papua Ecoregion, the Papua Ecoregion Development Control Center (P3E Papua), supported by FORCLIME, conducted an FGD on Environmental and Forestry Development Planning in Sorong City, West Papua from 23 - 24 September 2022. The purpose of this meeting was to synergize the national environmental and forestry development planning agenda with regional apparatus organizations that relate to the Strategic Agenda of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), specifically the implementation of FOLU Net Sink 2030, as stipulated under Minister of Environment and Forestry Decree No. 168/MENLHK/PKTL/PLA.1/2/2022.

The FGD was opened by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Ir. Bambang Hendroyono, M.M., who is also acting as the Director General for the Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and was attended by relevant regional apparatus organizations from the Provincial Governments of Papua and West Papua. Moreover, all KLHK technical implementing units in Papua and West Papua were also present.

Through this activity, it is hoped that synergy can be created between the technical implementing units of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and regional apparatus organizations in order to optimize the achievements of the FOLU Net Sink Indonesia 2030 target, particularly within the Papua Ecoregion.
