With the intension to improve forest governance, GIZ FORCLIME supports the development of data management systems in Berau and Kapuas Hulu Districts and East Kalimantan Province. A preliminary assessment of the condition and the requirements to develop the system has been conducted that also providing recommendations on the measurements needed and the road map development of data management in each region.

The data management will be developed in the Forest Management Units (FMUs) and the Forest Service District with the possibility of connection into the wider information systems in the future. From the design, the data management is expected to meet the needs of internal data demand for decision-making process and public data for policy making. This data management, for example, is expected to be connected with the national forestry data systems, meeting the needs of data for monitoring of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) and RAD - GRK (local action plan to reduce greenhouse gases).

The design of data management and the plan for its development was presented at the East Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service to obtain inputs from the stakeholders.

As part of a series of national and regional events organised in the name of the United Nations International Day of Forests, dated 21st of March, the Ministry of Forestry, supported by FORCLIME, held a one-day exhibition on 17th of March 2014 which focussed on the use of and benefits from forests, including forest management and Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) such as agarwood (gaharu), snakes, honey or mushrooms. The exhibition booth shared by FORCLIME and several departments in the Ministry of Forestry was also visited by the Minister of Forestry, Mr. Zulkifli Hasan, who also came to attend the celebrations. The event, accompanied with various speeches and lectures, combined both the International Day of Forests (March 21st) and the Indonesian Forester’s Day (March 16th).

Other events to celebrate the International Day of Forests 2014 in Indonesia – which takes place under the theme “Our Forest Our Future” – include, for instance, TV and radio advertising to highlight the importance of forests, a social media online photo contest, or a nationwide community tree planting action on 21st of March.

Following the success of the International Year of Forests 2011, the United Nations (UN) through its resolution 67/200 declared the 21st of March as the International Day of Forest (IDF), with the aim to celebrate and raise public awareness about the importance of all types of forests and of trees growing outside the forests. In line with the referred UN decision, the Ministry of Forestry, supported by GIZ FORCLIME, holds a series of events celebrating the IDF 2014.

Given that the IDF on March the 21st is close to the Forester Devoted Day (FDD) dated March 16, the celebration of IDF is synchronized with the FDD, as follows:
1.    A nationwide planting action on 21st of March 2014 by the Indonesian community.
2.    Tree Planting by the International Community in Jakarta on 12th of March.
3.    A one-day exhibition celebrating the International Forest Day 2014 on 17th of March at the premise of the Ministry of Forestry.
4.    A Photo Contest though Social Media (Facebook).
