The West Papua Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) currently manages 28 conservation areas spread across two provinces: West Papua and Southwest Papua. In order to review the effectiveness of conservation area management, the West Papua BBKSDA recently completed a self-assessment using the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) method. Five conservation areas previously completed self-assessments during August of last year. In 2024, supported by FORCLIME, the West Papua BBKSDA completed self-assessments across five nature reserves (CA) and two nature tourism parks (TWA), specifically: West Waigeo CA, East Waigeo CA, Batanta Island CA, Kofiau Island CA, Kofiau Sea CA, Sorong TWA and Klamono TWA. This self-assessment activity was carried out from 16 - 18 October 2024 in Sorong City and was led by the Head of the BBKSDA Technical Division, Mr. Tasliman, S.P., M.P. The event was also attended by representatives from each of the conservation areas involved.
During the implementation of the self-assessments, the participants were divided into seven groups in accordance with the number of conservation areas that were to be assessed. Each group was required to fill out a form in MS Excel format that contained the following elements: Data sheet, threat sheet, assessment sheet and recommendation sheet, as well as to submit a resume.
After the assessments and preparation of the resumes had been completed, the resumes were subsequently submitted to the Director-General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, who will issue a decree on the results of the effectiveness of conservation area management, and also provide directions that address the various follow-up actions that must be implemented. The implementation of these directions will be followed by periodic monitoring in order to ensure that activities are carried out in accordance with the relevant plans and attempts to achieve the desired goals.
