To determine the potential for the production of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) within the forest management unit (KPH) area in Papua Province, the Papua Forestry and Environment Service (DKLH), working in collaboration with the University of Papua and supported by FORCLIME, conducted a recent inventory of NTFPs over six months from July - December 2023. The study area included Forest Management Units (KPHPs) in Jayapura, Sarmi, Keerom, Lintas Sarmi Mamberamo Raya, Yapen, Waropen, as well as Forestry and Environment Service Branches (CDKLHs) in Jayapura, Sarmi, Keerom, Mamberamo Raya and Biak Numfor Protected Forest Management Units (KPHL). In addition to determining the potential for NTFPs, the study also aimed to increase community capacity in terms of efforts to empower the green economy through the downstream of NTFPs.
The study results were then discussed on 13 March 2024 in Jayapura, Papua. The discussion was led by the Secretary of the Papua Provincial Forestry and Environment Service and attending participants who, in addition to representatives from the Papua DKLH and the University of Papua, also included representatives from each forest management unit whose areas had been used as a study location, as well as development partners of Papua Province, including FORCLIME, Samdhana and Econusa.
From this study, initial data on the potentials and descriptions of non-timber forest products that have and have not been managed were produced. This data will subsequently be compiled into a book on non-timber forest product potential within Papua Province, which should prove useful in terms of the planning and management of non-timber forest products, as well as during the formulation of strategies and policies aimed at the development of non-timber forest products within Papua Province.
