The team found hundred of rafts of illegal logs allegedly from forest group of Buring River for further process. Through socialisation, negotiations and agreement of Buring Village community, on the same day with heavy equipments of PT. RHM, the closure of access for illegal rafts of logs by nailing (erecting) big logs of woods in the middle of the river yet community/traffic river access for other legal activities can go on. This is actually second integrated operation where the first operation was around Pancoran Village, Bayu Lencir Sub-District with seizure of hundreds of logs and access closure for illegal logs from forest group of north of Merang River and with nailing of big logs too. Merang and Buring River is one of the location where there are a lot illegal logging activities in MUBA, South Sumatera. The area is also where the last peat swamp forest and the deepest peat dome exist in South Sumatera with 8 metres deep. The peat swamp forest has high biodiversity and endangered species such as Sumateran Tiger. All these uniqueness requires us to save the peat swamp forest for its sustainability. Plus in the the area is where GTZ REDD Pilot Project is undergoing. The integrated operation of illegal logging in the area is not only strategicly very important for getting the certified emission reduction through REDD for MUBA District but also very important to minimize the leakage.
