To identify the potential availability of rattan as a non-timber forest product in Central Sulawesi, the Central Sulawesi Provincial Forestry Service and FORCLIME conducted a survey in the villages of Namo and Nupa Bomba in Sigi Regency on 20 – 21 April 2022. This initial survey aimed to ascertain the ability of natural rattan to support the work of Forest Farmers’ Groups (KTH) as they develop their capacities in relation to forest management and the marketing of sustainable non-timber forest products. In addition, the survey is also supporting other GIZ programme that relate to rattan, specifically the Rattan Sustainability Project. The results of this survey will ultimately be used as a part of the project in order to determine the locations of related activities through a consideration of rattan’s potential, the existence of rattan farmers’ groups and the possibility of developing a rattan processing site. This initial survey was led by Prof. Tanra from Tadulako University in Central Sulawesi.

The Rattan Sustainability Project is one of the GIZ programmes that is being managed by the Business Hub in collaboration with Vivere and Out for Space and is aiming to promote a sustainable supply chain for innovative rattan products.

In order to support the province of West Papua, which is hosting the Y20 and W20 side events, the University of Papua and FORCLIME held a coordination meeting on 19 April 2022. The meeting addressed preparations for the implementation of talk shows and exhibitions that will feature during the Y20 and W20 side events, which are set to be held at the Arboretum of the University of Papua in Manokwari, West Papua. Talk show themes addressed related to Youth (Y20) and its support for Papua’s green future. Meanwhile, in terms of Gender (W20), the proposed theme is women and sustainable forest management in Tanah Papua.

Two sessions will feature during the Y20 Talkshow, the first session will address lessons learned and sharing for young people in the province of West Papua, specifically the ‘Supporting Papua’s Green Future’ FORCLIME internship program, which has been implemented in three batches between 2019 and 2022. The speakers that will be involved in this session comprise FORCLIME internship alumni who are currently working and active in the fields of research, forest education development, forest programmes and climate change within Papua. The second session will follow the topic of Inspirational Youth in West Papua Province. The Y20 talk show will be held on 20 May 2022.

Meanwhile, the G20 Talkshow will be held on 21 May 2022 under the topic of Bureaucracy and the Role of Women, and the Role of Women in Forest Utilization at the Site Level.

During the two-day event, an exhibition will be held that will involve West Papuan youth and women’s groups.

In an effort to lay the groundwork for the development of the University of Ottow Geissler Papua Educational Forest (UOGP) in Jayapura, in 2021, the university, supported by FORCLIME, held Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) or public consultations with customary peoples and communities who live in and own the areas in and around the proposed location of the Educational Forest. The FPIC activity resulted in an agreement and received support from the community and other stakeholders as regards the Education Forest Development Plan. The location that has been chosen for the proposed Educational Forest comprises land for other purposes (APL) that belongs to the local customary communities. This ultimately means that the University of Ottow Geissler Papua will not need to submit a permit proposal that addresses the preparation of the Educational Forest to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

Following up on the FPIC activity, UOGP and FORCLIME held a meeting in order to discuss the preparation of a Long-Term Forest Management Plan (RPHJP) for the Educational Forest of Ottow Geissler University Papua on 14 April 2022 in Jayapura, Papua. The RPHJP will be drawn up as a management instrument so that the Educational Forest can be managed effectively and purposefully. The RPHJP is being prepared in line with Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P. 15/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM. 1/5/2018 on Forest Areas with Special Purposes (KHDTK). Senior lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Marine Affairs, University of Ottow Geissler Papua, Frank Leonardo Apituley, S.Hut., M.Si., welcomed the idea of the RPHJP. Mr. Apituley also added that a number of research and education activities have already been carried out at the location in question. In addition, the Papua Provincial Forestry Service, the Forest Management Unit and the Papua Natural Resources and Conservation Center also offered their full cooperation and support for the development of the UOGP Educational Forest. During the discussion, it was also agreed that the preparation of the RPHJP would be followed up by the identification of relevant data that is already available as a part of materials that are being used during the preparation of a description of the Educational Forest area of Ottow Geissler University Papua.
