2019 9 24 EU Climate diplomacy reduced

During the EU Climate Diplomacy Week 2019, which took place on 23 September to 6 October, the German Embassy cooperated with FORCLIME to conduct a talk show about “Youth for Forest Conservation” on 24 September at Manggala Wanabakti premises in Jakarta. More than a hundred participants from some universities [(Gajah Mada (Yogyakarta), Lambungmangkurat (Lampung), IPB (Bogor), Indonesia (Depok), Jenderal Soedirman (Central Java)], NGOs and representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry attended the event. Speakers of the event were participants of the FORCLIME Internship Programme (University of Papua), the International Forestry Students’ Association, Foresteract.com, and the Directorate General of Climate Change Management of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF).

“This is a very good platform for the youth to voice our aspirations to the Government of Indonesia. It is rare to find such opportunities.” Andreas, the speaker from the International Forestry Students’ Association, stated during the event.

Moreover, after talking with the representative from the DG Social Forestry and Sustainable Environment Partnership of the MoEF about the opportunity to assist Social Forestry implementation, Andreas added “What is even better are the opportunities for young people at this event. We finally have a chance to talk to government officials and addressed our needs in regard to youth participation in their programme.”

“I hope his event will inspire other institutions to provide platforms to discuss with the government in the same way as the German Embassy and GIZ have done through the Climate Diplomacy Week. All we need is the bridge between the youth and the government.” Arifah Hidayati, a student from Universitas Gadjah Mada, told the editorial.

During the EU Climate Diplomacy Week, the EC Delegations and embassies of several EU Member States held various events to foster dialogues and cooperation on climate change, showcase success stories and inspire future actions.
