A workshop on the preparation of an Annual Work Programme was held by FORCLIME from 24 - 27 January 2022 in Bogor, West Java and proved to be a success despite the implementation of strict health protocols set during the new normal adaptation period. The event was attended by the program director and FORCLIME staff, as well as by a number of students who had joined FORCLIME’s internship programme.
The workshop began with an introduction to the participants. This was followed by a brief presentation on the institutional dynamics of BMZ, GIZ and FORCLIME, which naturally affect the planning of work programmes. Several strategic materials/issues were presented and raised by each strategic manager, including:
1. Organizational restructuring.
2. Development of Forest Management Units (KPH).
3. Social Forestry.
4. Mitigation of climate change within the forestry sector.
5. Conservation of biodiversity.
6. Development of HR capacity.
An evaluation of the AWP 2021 affirmed that its various activities had been realised satisfactorily, particularly in relation to support for the management of the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve area. The second day of activities was followed by a discussion of each strategic field relating to the strategic plan that will be implemented during 2022. These discussions resulted in a final draft of the 2022 AWP. The third day of activities commenced with the introduction of the Onsite Operational (KOMP) system as a working instrument that will be used to facilitate technical and financial monitoring. This was followed by group discussions aimed at formulating a shared vision and commitment for the FORCLIME 4.0 program. The final day of activities proved to be more relaxed and featured a number of engaging games aimed at enhancing cooperation and communication within the team.
For Mia Esti Asmuruf, an intern at FORCLIME, attending discussions like this presents a valuable opportunity to learn a little about the various processes involved in FORCLIME’s collaboration with central and local agencies with the overall goal of programme implementation, the adaptation of FORCLIME to new technical and financial regulations and the regular reporting of FORCLIME activities. Mia further commented, “This event proved to be highly interactive and many discussions were designed to find shared perceptions that were in accordance with FORCLIME’s mandate, particularly as regards the preparation of a vision and commitment for the FORCLIME 4.0 programme. The results of the discussion were then presented in an attractive poster that included cut and pasted pictures taken from newspaper clippings and that illustrates our overall vision and commitment”.
In terms of the implementation plan for the FORCLIME 4.0 programme during 2022, one important challenge remains, specifically the full commitment of each member of staff in accordance with their respective work functions. Indeed, fruitful collaborations between technical and financial teams will ultimately determine the success of this programme and, for this reason, intensive communication between teams is seen as vital.
Sonia Kwano, an intern from Cenderawasih University, summarized her experience thus: “During the AWP 2022 workshop, I gained a lot of knowledge, specifically in relation to the issue of social forestry and various important forestry-related issues. The most memorable part of the event for me was being able to engage in direct discussions of forestry policies that will be applied across Indonesia, particularly within Papua. I would like to express my gratitude for the warm welcome that you extended to us [trainees] and that made us feel comfortable during the various activities that took place. We learnt a lot from the experienced FORCLIME team.”
